The 73rd Precinct Community Council held a dinner dance over the weekend to show appreciation for several local community activists and civic leaders.
This event was the first honoree event hosted by Anthony Newerls since he took over as the council’s president, and he wants it to become a tradition.
“This was our first dinner dance but we will continue to do this every year,” he said.
Newerls’s predecessor, Sarah Hall, was honored at the event for her 50-year career as a community advocate.
The NYPD’s Brooklyn North Chief Gerald Nelson was also honored for his work with the community to keep the peace through the years.
“In 10 years, [Nelson] has worked with many community leaders where he has prevented many riots from taking place,” said Newerls. “He has a great relationship with community leaders in North Brooklyn and that is why it was so important to honor him.”
Rep. Yvette Clarke (D–Prospect Heights) was on hand to hand the awards alongside Newerls.
This year’s slate of honorees also included Anthony “Tony” Herbert, community advocate and businessman, Oresa Napper-Williams, founder of Not Another Child and counselor to mothers who lost their sons to gun violence, and John Crummey, community advocate.
“All of these people were honored for the work they do through out Brooklyn” said Newerls.
