A huge stash of drugs will never see its way to the streets of Brooklyn because of the efforts of one hardworking cop.
“This was an excellent, excellent arrest,” said Captain James Grant, the 62nd Precinct’s executive officer.
Grant named Police Officer Yakov Kaushanskiy “Cop of the Month” during the May 20 meeting of the 62nd Precinct Community Council meeting, held at the precinct’s stationhouse at 1925 Bath Avenue.
Grant led the meeting, standing in for the precinct’s commander Captain John Sprague.
According the police, Officer Kaushanskiy was on routine patrol at about 10pm on April 25.
Kaushanskiy was joined by Police Officer Oliver Muir and Sergeant Geoff Varela, all members of the 62nd Precinct’s anti-crime unit.
The cops noticed a suspicious vehicle that made a turn from 86th Street onto 16th Avenue and failed to signal.
Once they stopped the car, it became abundantly clear that something was awry.
“When they approached the vehicle, a woman inside stepped out and two bags of heroin fell to the ground,” Grant said.
The falling drugs were only a fraction of what cops were about to discover.
“Upon further investigation, when we brought the vehicle back, they found 350 decks of heroin along with 80 bags of cocaine,” the executive officer stated.
“These were drugs that would probably have been sold to people in our neighborhood,” Grant added, later describing the size of the bust as “enormous.”
A woman in her 30’s was the sole occupant of the car.
Police say she has two addresses, in Bay Ridge and in Queens.
The woman was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, police said.
Officer Kaushanskiy has been assigned to the 62nd Precinct for the past two years.
It is his first assignment since graduating from the police academy.
The soft-spoken cop said he was proud to be recognized as “Cop of the Month”—the first such honor for the young officer.
Officer Kaushanskiy said the drug arrest was particularly satisfying as it will likely deter other neighborhood crimes.
“The people that are buying these drugs are the same ones that are committing other crimes,” he said.
