The city will be flooding Brighton Beach with cops to help stop a wave of burglaries and robberies in the neighborhood.
“We received an extra 25 officers for the area following a couple of strong-arm street robberies,” said Inspector Peter DiBlasio, commanding officer of the 60th Precinct, who called the uptick “troubling.”
So far this year, there have been 92 burglaries reported, as compared to 72 at this time last year, while 53 robberies have been committed, compared to 38 at this time last year.
But the crime wave doesn’t stop there.
“We’re also seeing car break-ins at an alarming rate, and there was already an iPod stolen at the beach,” said DiBlasio.
DiBlasio added that arrests are also way up in Brighton Beach, but that only seems to have put a dent in crimes against copper — apparently, thefts of copper tubing from construction sites are down.
The rise in Brighton Beach burglaries and robberies also comes as violent crime in the rest of precinct’s jurisdiction is down to record levels.
For the year there has been one reported murder as compared to six at this time last year.
“We’re also down six shootings for the year,” DiBlasio said.
