Courts of appeal: Marine park handball fix

The city has begun cleaning up the area surrounding Marine Park’s handball courts.

That plot of land, located between the handball courts facing Fillmore Avenue and the tennis courts off East 32nd Street, was demolished last week to make way for new blacktop, picnic tables and possibly a concession stand.

Local residents are happy about the work, which will cost $90,000, since that section of the park has been plagued by cracked concrete, broken tree branches and busted picnic tables.

“It’s pretty bad now,” said James Creeder, as he enjoyed a game of handball. “It’d be nice to have a better space. It’s a great idea.”

The space is near the new community center, which remains under construction and behind schedule. The city has not set a grand opening date for the facility.
