Crime continues its steep descent in the 76th Precinct, recent police data reveals.
For the year, all major categories of crime continue to slide 76th Precinct, according to police statistics for the week ending Nov. 8.
Robberies have dipped 22.1 percent, grand larceny is down 8.2 percent, car thefts have dropped 14.8 percent, while burglaries declined 5.9 percent. Assaults have slid 14.1 percent and rape down 66.7 percent, with one reported so far in 2009 compared to three for the same period in 2008. So far, three murders have been reported, compared to four in 2008.
In the past 28 days, the data is even sunnier, with overall crime down20 percent. For this period, robberies have fallen 77.8 percent, assaults down 66.7 percent and burglaries down a cool 25 percent. But there area few nagging clouds. Grand larcenies are up 46.2 percent in the past 28 days, with 19 incidents reported compared to 13 in 2008. Car thefts are also inching up in the last four weeks, up 33 percent, with four incidents compared to three for the same period a year ago.
Captain Kenneth Corey, the commanding officer of the precinct, said the grand larcenies in particular are often preventable. At the 76th Precinct Community Council’s Nov. 3 meeting, he urged residents to conscious about the whereabouts of their personal property. Most of the cases, he pointed out, turn out to be unattended property, for example, a purse left on a stroller while a busy mom runs in a store, a laptop left on a car seat, or a wallet forgotten atop a cafeteria counter. “When you come back, you’re wallet is gone,” Corey pointed out.
The precinct, located at 191 Union Street, covers Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Red Hook, Boerum Hill, and Gowanus.
