Crime is trickling downward in the 78th Precinct, falling 2.3 percent for the year, police statistics show.
The trend is led by a 15.9 percent fall in robberies, and a 36 percent drop in assaults, according to the most recently available data provided by the New York City Police Department.
But all is not rosy. For the year ending May 3, burglaries are up 9 percent, grand larcenies have seen a 6 percent pop, and car thefts are up 58 percent, according to NYPD data. So far, there have been no murders, and one rape reported in the precinct, which covers Park Slope and Windsor Terrace.
Still, for a 28−day period ending April 26, the data is even better. In this smaller window of time, overall crime is down 26.4 percent, according to NYPD statistics. The drive downward was led by a 41.7 percent decline in grand larcenies, the data shows.
An uptick in the number of home break−ins also seems to have declined, according to Captain Thomas Gleavy.
“We made a couple of arrests, and that ended it,” said Gleavy, who filled in at the April 28 meeting of the 78th Precinct Community Council for Deputy Inspector John Argenziano, the commanding officer of the precinct. Gleavy said the precinct went from 4−8 incidents a week, “to practically none.” He said that in most of the cases, the object of desire was a laptop computer.
