Mom, dad and the kids donned their helmets and put the pedal to the metal for the fourth annual Tour de Brooklyn bike ride, sponsored by Transportation Alternatives.
The family-friendly challenge for Bike Month 2008 – one of the city’s largest free cycling events – stepped off at Water and Dock streets, engaging cyclists in an 18-mile ride through the Borough of Churches.
The race was preceded by a children’s parade over the Brooklyn Bridge, coinciding with the famed viaduct’s 125th anniversary weekend.
The youngsters then joined the main group of riders in DUMBO before heading off towards the Atlantic Yards, traveling along scenic Eastern Parkway, the neighborhood streets of Bushwick and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
“Nowhere in New York City has bicycling taken root as it has here in Brooklyn,” said Transportation Alternatives Executive Director Paul Steely White, adding, “With more cyclists and bike lanes than ever, now is the time to experience Brooklyn on two wheels.”
