Cyclones 5
Vermont 3
July 28 at Vermont
The Cyclones are finally over .500 – posting a winning record for the first time this season – after a 5–3 win at Vermont on Thursday night.
Brooklyn jumped out to a lead in the first inning against Lake Monsters starter A.J. Puk. Colby Woodmansee got it started with a two-out double and scored on Pete Alonso’s single. Alonso moved to second on Jacob Zanon’s walk and came around to score on Desmond Lindsay’s single to right.
The Cyclones padded the lead in the third. Woodmansee struck out, but reached on a throwing error by the catcher. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Alonso’s triple. Alonso scored his second run of the night on a sacrifice fly by Zanon, giving Brooklyn a four-run cushion.
Vermont got one back in the third on a one-out home run by Eli White to cut the lead to 4–1. That was as much as the Lake Monsters would get from Brooklyn starter Harol Gonzalez. The right-hander improved to 3–1 on the season with another dominant outing, giving up one hit on six runs and striking out 11.
Brooklyn added insurance in the sixth as Lindsay walked and then scored on a double by Ali Sanchez.
Gary Cornish came on in relief for the Clones in the eighth and made things for the squad, giving up four hits as Vermont clawed back to make it a 5–3 game. Cornish managed to get out of the inning without any more damage, striking out James Terrell and stranding runners on the corners. He was a picture of poise in the ninth, putting Vermont down in order as the Cyclones improved to 20–19 on the season.
Brooklyn faces off against the Lake Monsters at 7:05 pm on Friday night, looking to keep this latest success streak alive.
