Cyclones 5
Batavia 1
July 4 at Batavia
The Cyclones didn’t waste any time, jumping out to a first inning lead on Monday night, en route to a series-opening victory over Batavia.
Ali Sanchez picked up where he left off the night before, connecting on a two-run single off Muckdogs starter Reilly Hovis in the top of the first. Brooklyn added another run in the second as Arnaldo Berrios doubled and scored on Dale Burdick’s subsequent single.
In the third, Woodmansee homered to left-center, giving the Cyclones a 4–0 lead.
Merandy Gonzalez was dominant on the mound in the win, settling into a rhythm early. Only one Muckdog reached base in the first four innings – on a third inning error by second baseman Nick Sergakis.
In the fifth, Batavia’s Aaron Knapp reached on a throwing error by Sanchez to begin the inning. Isaiah White broke up the no-hitter with an infield single to third, but was caught trying to steal second. A wild pitch from Gonzalez scored Knapp for Batavia’s lone run, but that was all the squad would get as David Gauntt struck out to end the inning.
The Cyclones wrapped up the victory in the sixth as Jacob Zanon led off the stanza with a triple. With two outs, Cone beat out a ground ball to second and Zanon scored to give Brooklyn a 5-1 lead.
Gonzalez picked up the win, tossing seven innings and giving up one run on two hits.
Mets first-round pick Justin Dunn made his pro debut with two shutout innings to secure the 5–1 win. Dunn allowed a pair of hits in the eighth, but got Corey Bird to ground into a double play to end the inning. Then he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.
The 8–10 Cyclones try to make it two in a row when they take on Batavia at 7:05 pm on Tuesday.
UPS AND DOWNS
