The Cyclones keep on slipping, slipping, slipping, into the future.
A double by Jhoan Urena that tied last night’s game wasn’t enough to secure the Cyclones’ wildcard playoff berth as they gave up a second straight game to the Valleycats, dropping their lead in the standings to just one game ahead of the Connecticut Tigers with two left to play.
Corey Oswalt took the mound for the Clones and once again had a strong outing. He kept the game scoreless until the fourth inning, when he gave up a home run, his first of the year.
Jhoan Urena stepped up to the plate in the sixth inning with the game still 1–0, with one man on and one man out, and hit his 18th double of the year to tie the game.
The Valleycats answered in the bottom of the inning and scored two more runs in Oswalt’s final inning on the mound. Oswalt pitched six innings, gave up three runs on six hits, and struck out three. The loss was his second of the season.
The Mini-Mets nearly made a comeback in the ninth when Michael Bernal got hit by a pitch, a throwing error moved him over, and he crossed the plate on a ground ball to center by Anthony Chavez. But it wasn’t enough.
The three-game upstate series wraps up tonight as the Cyclones look to maintain their grip on the coveted last playoff spot.
