Cyclones split Fathers Day double-header with Yanks

Staten Island 2

Cyclones 1

June 15 on Staten Island (Game one)

Texas giant Casey Meisner gave up just one run in 4.1 innings of work, but the Cyclones could muster little offense — and fanned a whopping 18 times — during the team’s first trip to the Rock, losing in extra innings of a scheduled seven-inning game.

The strikeouts came early and often of the Clones, as Staten Island starter Sam Agnew-Weiland — the only pitcher in the league whose surname combines those of a former vice-president and rock star — struck out the side in the first, and notched two more over 2.2 innings of work.

Down 1–0 in the third, the Mini-Mets tied things up when new Yankee pitcher Chad Taylor (five strikouts) walked Michael Bernel with two on, then walked Michael Katz to score Tyler Moore.

But the Clones couldn’t touch reliever Jose “Smoke” Taylor, who struck out seven more Clones in 3.2 innings of work.

The game remained tied until the ninth when Empire stormtrooper Ty Mcfarland worked a bases loaded walk off Cyclone hurler Edioglis Villasmil, scoring Collin Slaybaugh who was the first of four walks in the inning for Villasmil.

Marcos Molina threw six innings of one-run ball and Michael Katz doubled and scored to runs to lead the Cyclones over the hated Yankees.

The Yankees took an early lead against Molina thanks to two second-inning Cyclone errors, but Clones players cleaned up their act the rest of the way behind the pitcher Baseball Prospectus lists as one of the New York Mets Top-10 prospects.

The Clones took the lead in the fourth when first baseman Michael Katz hit a one-out double to left. One out later, Joe Tuschak singled Katz to third before Katz scored on an error by Renzo Martini off the bat of Jeff Diehl.

But the Yankees tied things up in the fifth off Molina, who allowed a single to Jose Javier and a double to Austin Aune that drove in Javier.

But the Clones answered back in the sixth when Katz reached on an error and scored on a double by Michael Berna.

Juan Urbina closed it out for the Cyclones with a scoreless seventh.

The Opening Weekend set against the Evil Empire of the New York-Penn League concludes tonight at home at 7 pm.
