Cyclones sweep Yankees

Cyclones 3
Staten Island 2

July 27 at Staten Island

Outfielder Patrick “To Infinity and” Biondi played a part in all three runs and three costly Yankee fielding errors helped the Cyclones beat their hated rivals for the team’s first sweep of the year.

Biondi singled to left field on the first at-bat of the game and shortstop Gavin Cecchini, returning from an ankle injury, followed with a single of his own. Biondi scored in the same inning off a fielding error, one of three that would ultimately sink the Yankee ship on the day.

Staten Island took its first lead of the two-game set in the fifth on RBI singles by Jose Rosario and Brandon Thomas, but the lead didn’t last long.

In the seventh, Colton Plaia reached on the second Yankee error of the game and Juan Gamboa singled, setting the stage for the tying run. Biondi hit his single to left to allow Plaia to score and yet another fielding error allowed Gamboa to also make it home for the winning run.

Brooklyn’s reliever Kevin McGowan did the rest, taking over in the bottom half of the seventh. He allowed a hit on the first batter he faced, but went on to retire the next nine in a row for the save.

The Boys of Summer have matched their longest win streak of the year at three games, and look to extend it with a two-game set against the division leading Hudson Valley Renegades, starting tonight at 5 pm.
