The Cyclones began a crucial three-game series against the Scrappers, who lead in the wild card race, with a big win.

The Scrappers, aided by a double-steal, got a run in the first, but after that, it was mostly all Cyclones.

In the second, the Cyclones got on the board on Cole Frenzel’s double. And in the third, a run scored on an error, making the score, 2–1.

Three more runs scored in the fifth, two on Richard Lucas’s triple and another on a wild pitch.

The Cyclones made it 6–1 in the sixth when Ismael Tijerina bunted home Travis Taijeron.

The Scrappers got to starter Carlos Vazquez in the sixth, loading the bases on a single, a double and hit batter. That’s when manager Rich Donnelly summoned Orlando Tovar from the bullpen — but Tovar promptly gave up a sac fly and a two-run double, making the score 6–4.

But the Cyclones put it out of reach in the eighth, scoring four runs in a barrage. Charles Thurber led off with a double, moved to third on a bunt and then scored on a wild pitch. After Tyler Carpenter walked, Tijerina doubled him home, then scored on two wild pitches. Another single scored another run before the rally ended.

The Cyclones pounded 13 hits on the night, cutting Mahoning Valley’s wild-card lead over the Cyclones to just one game.

Newcomer T.J. Rivera was 4-for-5 on the night.

The Cyclones return home to MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449-8497] on Aug. 17 at 7 pm. For info, visit www.brooklyncyclones.com.
