Cyclones unravel the Spinners for the second straight night

Spinners 1

Sept. 1 at Lowell

The Clones jumped to the early with three in their first at-bat. Daniel Muno led off with a single and moved to third on Charles Thurber’s double. Javier Rodriguez knocked in Muno with a single, and a Richar Lucas walk loaded the bases for Cole Frenzel, who laced a two-RBI single to right.

An insurance run scored in the fifth on a Lucas single. And another run came in during a wild seventh inning. Muno again led off with a single and moved to second on a botched pickoff attempt. Thurber lined to right to put runners on the corner for Tillman Pugh, who popped up to the outfield — just deep enough for Muno to try to score, but just shallow enough for him to be gunned down. But it didn’t kill the rally, as Lucas walked and Frenzel knocked in Thurber with a single.

Pitchers Chris Hilliard and Randy Fontanez handled the first six innings perfectly, but reliever Rafael Montero promptly gave up a run in the home seventh on two singles, a walk and a double play ball.

A Frenzel single in the ninth added another run, and a passed ball capped the scoring.

The win, coupled with a Williamsport loss, means that the Cyclones are one game up in the wild-card race with three games to play.

The Cyclones are home against the Staten Island Yankees at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449-8497] on Friday night at 7 pm. For info, visit www.brooklyncyclones.com.
