It ain’t over ’til it’s over.
The Cyclones used a three-run eighth inning after recording just one hit in the previous seven to stun the Renegades on Thursday and increase the gap between the second- and third-place squad.
Gavin Cecchini recorded the only hit for the Cyclones in the opening inning, but the Clones didn’t record another hit until late in the game. Meanwhile, Hudson Valley scored on a sacrifice fly by Granden Goetzman that seemed to be the winning margin until the eighth.
In the eighth, Patrick “To Infinity and” Biondi led off with a single and Ismael Tijerina reached first on a fielding error that also moved Biondi to second. Cecchini hit a deep sacrifice fly on two strikes to the game.
Teasley intentionally walked Alex Sanchez before James “Papa” Roche hit a single, loading the bases. A wild pitch by Teasley allowed Tijerina to score the go-ahead run, and Matt “Bright Eyes” Oberste put on an exclamation point with an RBI single that bounced off the third base bag to score Sanchez.
Clones’ starter Dario Alvarez threw six effective innings and Akeel “The Cat” Morris piggybacked for the last three without losing a step. The two pitchers combined to throw eight strikeouts.
The Cyclones are now just a game behind the McNamara Division-leading Aberdeen IronBirds.
The Clones will travel to play Hudson Valley tonight in the last match of the year between the two division rivals. The first pitch will be thrown at 7:05 pm.
