Two drag-racing motorists struck a pair of 12-year-old bicyclists in Gravesend near the corner of Avenue S and E. Fourth Street on Nov. 1, leaving both children hospitalized — one of them with a brain injury — before fleeing the scene.
Horrified witnesses said one of the speeding cars, believed to be a dark-colored BMW, struck both boys, whose names were not released, as they crossed Avenue S at 10 pm. One of them was seated on the bike and pedaling, the other was standing on the rear-wheel pegs.
Both children were brought to Lutheran Medical Center, police said.
One boy suffered scrapes and bruises while the other was thrown from the bike and suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, according to preliminary reports. The child was listed in critical but stable condition, officials said.
Witnesses told police that the cars were racing down Avenue S just before hitting the victims.
