Drama students at PS 207 delivered the magic of Broadway’s “The Lion King” to Marine Park when they took the stage in the school’s spring production of the Disney musical on June 10.

The director of the production said the junior-high thespians were thrilled to take on one of Broadway’s longest-running shows — and having big paws to fill was no obstacle for the skilled songbirds.

“The cast was fantastic,” said Kimberly Simek. “They’re a good bunch, and I was very pleased with them.”

The students studied African culture, wildlife, and geography in preparation for the play, even mastering songs in Swahili. They wore tribal paint and costumes based on traditional African styles for the performance.

Simek said that she shared her students’ enthusiasm and jumped at the opportunity to create her own version of the beloved show.

“Everybody loves it, everybody knows it,” she said. “The music is just fantastic, and I wanted to be a part of it.”
