They sweated it out, but they survived.
Two cats abandoned in a sealed, airless tub outside a Stillwell Avenue pet store on a sweltering hot day were saved by animal rescue volunteers — and now need a loving home.
The male pussies were found by workers at Petco at 86th Street as they arrived for work on July 15. The cats, Miller and Molsen, were secured inside a Rubbermaid tub, with the lid securely taped and nothing more than a note that stated that their owners had lost their jobs and could no longer care for them.
Petco workers called Nancy Rogers and Hope Stogel, volunteers at K9Kastle, which was a big break for the tiger-striped tabbies.
“Petco’s policy is to notify the Center for Animal Care and Control whenever an animal is abandoned. But the center then takes the animal and if not adopted in three days, it’s euthanized,” Rogers explained. “But we have a relationship with Petco, and they allow us to cage about six cats a month in each of their shops.”
This summer, Rogers said, has been “the worst.”
“I’ve seen so many more people dumping cats and kittens. With the economy the way it is, adoptions are way down,” she said.
Hence the problem for Miller and Molsen.
For now, the cats are being fostered at Stogel’s house in Georgetown, where they are getting over their ordeal, though each has eight lives remaining.
“They were both so frightened, but they are large in personality,” she said.
