Summer may have officially ended on Labor Day, but the warm-weather fun kept rolling for another weekend with the Sheepshead Summer Stroll on Sept. 7.
Crowds took over Sheepshead Bay Road from Emmons Avenue to East 15th Street for the second installment of a new summer event that featured classic cars, live music, and plenty of food.
For folks hungry for a meaty competition, Jimmy’s Famous Heros Hero Eating Contest was the juiciest part of the day — but the winner said demolishing a pair of two-and-a-half-pound heros didn’t weigh him down.
“I’ve done hot dogs, pizza, hamburgers, dumplings, kimchi, a hands-free pie eating contest,” said Wayne Algenio who lives in Queens. “Eating those two heros didn’t fill me up at all.”
One regular at Jimmy’s Famous Heros, said if he knew competitors were only eating a few pounds of meat, he would have signed up.
“I would have participated, myself,” said Dan Rudoy, who downed his own sandwich after watching the contest.
But the day wasn’t just about food. For locals with an appetite for action, there was a martial arts show.
“She saw the karate show,” said Annemarie Cingari, whose daughter Emily enjoyed the event with a friend. “She said they were jumping over people.”
Another local said she loved the classic cars.
“There was one — a convertible — with brown and leather seats,” said Marina Ryzhak. “It is a classic car and you don’t really see that often.”
Ryzhak attended the first-ever Sheepshead Summer Stroll back in June, and said she’ll be back next year because the event had something for everyone.
“There was everything for kids, for adults,” she said.
