Everything but pie at this apple contest

Pie was definitely not the apple of the eye when the Brooklyn Kitchen held a benefit contest, aptly entitled, “Apples: Anything But Pie.”

Creative cooks came up with new and imaginative ways to elevate the pomaceous status of the popular fruit at the Williamsburg pantry, 616 Lorimer Street, as they toiled to raise money for the food pantry of the Greenpoint Reform Church, 138 Milton Street.

Among the finger-lickin’ gems were pulled pork sandwiches with fresh apple slaw and veggie kugel with goat cheese and apples.

The winner was neighborhood gal Angelica Rosado, 16, who was awarded a pie kit for her novel apple, turkey and meatball soup.
