This week’s delivery included cabbage, kale, beans, lettuce, dill and summer squash. Low-income Flatbush families can now bring fresh produce to their dining tables, while also supporting a regional farm, thanks to a new agronomical project that melts away the middleman.
Flatbush Farm Share, a new Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group of Brooklyn consumers who buy their fruits, veggies meat and eggs directly from the farmers who grow and cultivate them, made its healthy arrival at the CAMBA office site at the Flatbush Reformed Dutch Church, 890 Flatbush Avenue, where program participants can select organic produce from the Farm at Miller’s Crossing in Upstate, New York, each Wednesday.
Shares are offered for all income levels, and a “generous” subsidy program is available for low-income members.
“By subscribing to a weekly basket of the most affordable, fresh, organic produce available, members of Flatbush Farm Share are supporting a family-owned farm, and providing a measure of food security to the neighborhood we are based in,” reads an excerpt from the group’s website.
The program also offers fruit and egg shares through Breezy Hill Orchards, and coffee shares through Crop to Cup, a Brooklyn-based coffee roaster and distributor.
