Councilman Lew Fidler plans to brighten the lives of needy children — and break a personal record for playthings collected — as he tries to round up more than 7,000 toys at this year’s Community First Toy Drive.

“Every toy we collect is another happy child!” said the district leader (D-Marine Park), who was busy organizing his 41st A.D. Democrats Club on Haring Street near Avenue R for the Dec. 15 donation-thon. “We want to make more children happy than we did last year.”

Only Santa has more stuff!

Last holiday season, the lawmaker and his team of elves collected 7,790 toys — nearly 2,000 more than the year before.

The gifts will benefit the 63-year-old U.S. Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots Program, which estimated that one of every 32 gifts it distributed in 2010 came from Fidler’s toy drive.
