Finally, a Brooklyn Flea just for food

The operators of the popular Brooklyn Flea antiques and craft markets have created a gastro-centric marketplace that launches on May 21.

The outdoor Saturday souk will feature upstate organic farmers, along with a slew of local venders — duck confit slingers, goat cheese masters and carrot gardeners among them — on the Williamsburg waterfront at N. Sixth Street.

The site, at the Edge condos, already hosts a Williamsburg spinoff of the successful Fort Greene Brooklyn Flea market every Sunday, specializing in funky vintage clothes and kitschy art.

The new marketplace — dubbed “Smorgasburg” — was created to capitalize on the intense demand for Brooklyn-made foodstuffs, said organizer Eric Demby.

“The number of people making good food in Brooklyn just keeps going up,” he said, promising 100 vendors, picnic tables and demonstrations from chefs.

“My dream is to get the upstate famers and local venders work together,” Demby said. “The farmers could be a little more hip — and the vendors a little more hippie.”
