We’re pleading the Fifth — Fifth Avenue, that is!
In honor of this weekend’s Fifth Avenue Festival, we’re bringing you things to do in and around the Ridge’s original “restaurant row.”
On Saturday, sink your teeth into a killer flick — the Bay Ridge Jewish Center (405 81st St. between Fourth and Fifth avenues) is screening George A. Romero’s zombie masterpiece “Night of the Living Dead” — and it’s a short shamble from Fifth Avenue. For $20, you get to watch a bunch of meshugganah Pennsylvanians nosh noggins and break practically every dietary proscription in the Torah — plus you get hot dogs and popcorn!
Celebrate the heart and soul of Bay Ridge during the Fifth Avenue Festival (Fifth Avenue between Bay Ridge Avenue and 85th Street) on Sunday. The New Jersey tube-sock jockeys will be out in full force, but so will a lot of local businesses. And if the prospect of spending time outside — in the sun — makes your skin crawl and your liver quiver with rage, dip into one of the avenue’s dives for a cold one. The Bean Post Pub (7525 Fifth Ave. between Bay Ridge Parkway and 76th Street) is holding a karaoke competition from noon to 6 pm — the entire length of the festival. Schnitzel Haus will (7319 Fifth Ave. between 73rd and 74th streets) have live music from Cherry Bomb and Steppin’ Back starting at 2 pm. And Mussels and More (8001 Fifth Ave. between 80th and 81st streets) is cracking open live tunes from Prodigal Child and Head and South starting at 1 pm.
And don’t stray far from Fifth Avenue when the festival is over, because you won’t want to miss the 29th meeting of the Bay Ridge Poets Society at the Owl’s Head (479 74th St. between Fourth and Fifth avenues). The monthly meeting of minds at the wine bar off Fifth Avenue affords you a chance to follow poet Charles Baudelaire’s imperative to “always be drunk … On wine, poetry, virtue, whatever” to a T — don’t pass it up.
