Fire rips through Flatbush Ave. apartment

Two people were injured Tuesday morning after an all-hands fire erupted inside a Flatbush Avenue apartment near Foster Avenue, officials said.

As this paper went to press, fire marhsals were reportedly investigating the possibility that the blaze was sparked by a mentally ill woman — the same woman who was injured in the blaze.

FDNY officials said that upwards of 60 firefighters converged on the apartment building at 10:40 a.m. after the blaze began to eat its way through a third-floor apartment.

A young family in an adjoining apartment managed to get out safely as firefighters scrambled to put out the blaze.

When the smoke cleared, a firefighter was rushed to Kings County Hospital suffering from a minor injury. An older woman from the apartment where the fire erupted was also rushed to Kings County Hospital. Her condition was not known by late Tuesday.

Neighbors said that the injured woman reportedly suffers from schizophrenia. She was overheard saying that Tuesday was going to be “her last day.”

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
