The Brooklyn Aviators failed to capitalize on the winning momentum sparked by their season opening victory against the hated Akwesasne Warriors on Friday night as they suffered a 3-2 loss to the Cape Cod Bluefins in overtime.
Failing to seize an early power play opportunity following a brawl between Aviator right-winger Anthony Iaquinto and Bluefin defenseman Corey Bellamy, both teams remained scoreless well into the second period.
Cape Cod was first to break the 0-0 tie at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center in Massachusetts as Bluefins left-winger Kevin Matheson wristed a shot right under Aviator goaltender Pete Dundovich’s arm.
Matheson scored again in the second period, but Aviator right-winger Casey Mignone quickly cut the Bluefins lead in half with some stylish skating and a crushing backhand shot.
Mignone tied everything up in the third, sending the game into overtime — which the Bluefins ultimately used to their advantage.
