Snake guise

Be careful what you hiss for! The new tragedy “Lamia,” from Theatre Uzume, follows a snake-bodied woman who becomes human in order to pursue the man she loves. The ambitious show blends music, dance, theater, and fashion, with costumes from fashion line Tilly and William that transform along with the changing characters. Performances continue through May 7.

8 pm at ShapeShifter Lab [18 Whitwell Place, between Carroll Street and 3rd Ave. in Gowanus, (323) 684–5887, www.shapeshifterlab.com]. $25 ($20 in advance).

One stop should be the Community Bookstore, which will break out the beers in the afternoon and hold a reading at 7 pm from from authors Paul Aster (pictured), Bill Corbett, and Felix Parr.

Hit him with your best shot: In the new rock musical “Killing Republicans,” opening on April 22, Princess Pat will briefly play President Abraham Lincoln, as well as the pop star Goodness Gracious.

The Brooklyn Arts Council holds its 50th Anniversary dinner and awards ceremony tonight, and if you have an extra $300, you should go to that! Otherwise, hit the Alive with Art After-Party, where the hoi-polloi can mingle with fancy artists, have some drinks, and enjoy performances from musicians Rachel Brown (pictured) and The Bones of J.R. Jones.

10 pm at 26 Bridge (26 Bridge St. between John and Plymouth streets in Dumbo), www.brooklynartscouncil.org. $30 ($20 in advance).

Solo together

Two indie rockers from opposite coasts will rock the borough tonight: Brooklyn songwriter Mirah (pictured) and Los Angeles musical polymath Jherek Bischoff. Each of the acclaimed performers, known for their many collaborations, will present a separate set of new songs, backed up by a string quartet and by Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier on percussion.

In character: The cast of “Lamia,” a show about a snake who becomes a woman who becomes a snake, dances and sings at a dress rehearsal at Shapeshifter Lab. The show will run through May 7.
