One Marine Park school celebrated Flag Day early thanks to a local business’s donation of star-spangled banners.
The kids of PS 277 gathered on June 12 wearing red, white and blue to sing patriotic tunes and recite poems for an audience of local veterans and to thank the good neighbors who donated 30 American flags to color their classrooms.
The Nuzzolese Bros. Ice Company donated the flags on behalf of “Flags for the Flagless,” an Arizona-based non-profit that provides classrooms with American flags by working with local businesses. Members of the Nuzzolese family were on hand to present the stars and stripes to the school.
PS 227’s principal said that the gesture was an invaluable lesson for the students.
“It was wonderful,” said Jeanne Fish. “We always try to teach the children about generosity and being good citizens, and this was a great example.”
The school celebrates Flag Day — established in 1916 to commemorate June 14, 1777, when the Second Continental Congress adopted the stars and stripes as the United States’ national flag — every year, the principal said.
“It’s always very nice,” said Fish. “But this year it was even more special.”
