Fooled by the old sublet scam

A 21-year-old woman lost more than $1,000 in an online housing scam.

In mid-July, the woman arranged to sublet an apartment on Henry Street between Pineapple and Clark streets from a man she met online, and mailed the man a check for $1,300.

When the woman arrived to the apartment complex on Aug. 10, the building’s security was unaware of any arrangements for her to live there or of any residents under the name the woman was given.

Police said that the 22-year-old former beau reacted violently, slamming the woman’s head into a curb in front of her apartment on Bergen Street near Third Avenue. When police arrived, the man fled.

The woman suffered swelling and bruises, but did not need medical attention.

He told cops that he had left his the vehicle unattended at the corner of Old Fulton and Hicks streets in DUMBO at 5 pm.

When the man returned, his driver’s side window had been shattered with a brick.

Gone was an Apple laptop, an $180 cellphone, and a $650 wedding ring.
