This weekend, the Teatro Experimental Blue
Amigos Inc. (TEBA) will perform "Rivera’s Last Frida: The
Communist Affair" at the Impact Theater in Prospect Heights.
The play, written and directed by Park Slope’s own Hector Luis
Rivera, focuses on Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s relationships
with her husband, artist Diego Rivera, and one of her many lovers,
Russian socialist Leon Trotsky, while also exploring her political
and sexual ideology.
"It uses dark humor to focus on a woman who was incredibly
complex," said TEBA’s executive director Kathy Tejada.
Based on writings in Kahlo’s diary, letters and notes, as well
as excerpts from Meaghan Delahunt’s novel, "In the Casa
Azul," some of the play’s highlights include: a more human
Trotsky, a Frida singing in French and a Frida played by a man.
TEBA is a touring company now celebrating their 16th season.
They have won numerous theater awards and boast that they are
"the only bilingual, experimental and avant-garde Latino
theater company in Kings County." "Rivera’s Last Frida"
is TEBA’s first full-length play in English.
TEBA’s production of "Rivera’s Last Frida" will be
performed at the Impact Theater (190 Underhill Ave. at Sterling
Place in Prospect Heights) on June 12 at 8 pm and June 13 at
3 pm. General admission is $20; $15 for students and senior citizens.
