The People’s Firehouse (PFI) and Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG), in partnership with the Greenpoint-Williamsburg Tenant Anti-Displacement Collaborative, are co-hosting a Tenant Aid Workshop in order to help tenants living in the Northside neighborhood that are at risk of being displaced from their homes.
The seminar takes place at 7 p.m., April 28 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel RC Church, 275 North Eighth Street.
This is the first of several Workshops which have been planned in Brooklyn Community Board One. Along with NAG and PFI, the Collaborative consists of Churches United, Los Sures, the North Brooklyn Development Corp., St. Nicholas Neighborhood Preservation, and Brooklyn Legal Services.
The formation of the Collaborative is the result of the community’s successful effort in convincing the city of New York to develop a program and provide funding and technical assistance to local community organizations to more effectively address the crucial issues of tenant displacement and affordable housing.
The collaborative seeks to educate residential tenants throughout the community of their legal rights, including the new Anti-Harassment provisions recently approved during the city’s Greenpoint-Williamsburg rezoning; assist displaced or soon-to-be displaced tenants in finding affordable housing opportunities; make available comprehensive counseling services to help tenants through all phases of the process; and provide access to legal consultation and/or representation when needed.
As Greenpoint-Williamsburg continues to go through dramatic development and land-use changes, the collaborative is committed to fighting for the preservation and creation of affordable housing, so that all income groups may share in the benefits resulting from the changes taking place and that their vision of a stable, mixed-income community can be realized.
