Get the gluten out: pizzeria introduces new pie

When area parents noticed that, with all the new pizza joints springing up in Williamsburg, not one of them offered a gluten free option, they went to Vertuccio’s Pizza on the Park General Manager Elina Vertuccio and asked if they would be willing to add it to the menu of the newly opened Vertuccio’s Pizza on the Park.

Vertuccio’s head chef, Gaetano Giuffre, was at first a bit hesitant, having never tackled gluten-free cooking before, but when one patron offered up the recipe he said he would be willing to try. A few weeks later Vertuccio’s is ready to unveil its first Gluten-Free Pie at the McCarren Park Farmer’s Market, November 14, where they will be passing out samples of the first pies available to the public.

After that the gluten free pizzas hit the menu, in all varieties, like a traditional Margherita and a special Roasted Vegetable.

Vertuccio’s Pizza on the Park is located at 232 North 12th Street, bounded by Driggs & Union avenues, and Roebling Street, across the street from McCarren Park and, since opening two months ago, has been serving up rustic Southern Italian dishes such as fresh homemade pasta and dynamic twists on classic brick oven pizzas, salads, grilled fish and meats with a home style feel but an inventive new twist.

Gluten has been linked to many different diseases, and parents have been known to treat Attention Deficit or Hyperactive disorder in children with a gluten free diet.
