Get your free rain barrel on May 27
Councilman Chaim Deutsch

The rain, it’s plain, falls mainly … in the barrels!

And that’s a good thing, says Councilman Chaim Deutsch (D–Sheepshead Bay), who will hold his fourth-annual rain barrel giveaway May 27, where free rain barrels will be distributed on a reservation-only basis at Madison High School.

“Reusing rainwater is an easy, practical, and effective way to be environmentally conscious,” Deutsch said. “In addition, repurposing rainwater for activities — such as watering the lawn, washing your car, or cleaning the exterior of your home — also offers homeowners the opportunity to save money on their water bills.”

About 200 free barrels will be available, according to a spokeswoman for Deutsch, but she warned that interested parties must reserve a barrel in advance by calling the councilman’s district office. She added that the barrels will be equipped with a cover, as well as a small attachment that can be connected to a hose for draining, so there’s need to leave standing water uncovered.

“I’m happy to partner with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to offer my constituents the opportunity to collect a free rain barrel for their home,” Deutsch added. “Recycling natural resources and saving money — it’s a win-win!”
