Have you been
enjoying Celebrate Brooklyn’s offerings at the Prospect Park
band shell this summer? Did you boogie with Dr. John or the Lincoln
Center Jazz Orchestra or at the screening of "Jailhouse
Rock" or the daylong African festival? Although their motto
is "Keep it great, give $3 at the gate," that donation
is not enough to sustain this summer-long, international extravaganza
of talent.
On Aug. 24-25 – Celebrate Brooklyn’s final performance dates
– you have a chance to give back to Brooklyn Information and
Culture, which has given you so much. Purchase tickets ($37.50)
to the benefit concerts featuring "folk-hip-hop-soul-country-funk-alterna-rockers"
Cake (pictured), Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips (of "She Don’t
Use Jelly" fame), De La Soul and Kinky and enjoy a smorgasbord
of cult groups. This lineup, the Unlimited Sunshine tour, will
perform on both days.
"There’s an interesting mix of alternative and cult music
that appeals to kids as young as 16 to 18," Celebrate Brooklyn
co-producer Jack Walsh said of the Sunshine tour. "Yet Flaming
Lips is a much more mature act that appeals to people as old
as 35. In fact, they have an extraordinarily successful new record
["Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" (Warner Bros.)]
out now and an interesting video component to their live show.
Cake is just a great, fun pop-rock group; Modest Mouse is an
alternative rock group from the Pacific Northwest; De La Soul
is a fun, hip-hoppy thing; and Kinky is another one of those
rocking Espanol bands from Mexico."
As part of their Brooklyn show the tour has hired the local Hackensaw
Boys, who play regularly at Two Boots, to do a few short sets,
said Walsh.
The performances will take place at 4:30 pm at the Prospect Park
band shell, located near Ninth Street and Prospect Park West.
