Good pitching plus clutch hitting equals Cyclones win

Cyclones 4
Lowell 3

July 8 at MCU Park

The Cyclones exploded for a three-run second inning and then scored a tie-breaking run in the eighth to stop Lowell’s comeback attempt to pick up the team’s third-straight win.

In the second, outfielder Jared King doubled before singles by first baseman Matt “Bright Eyes” Oberste and catcher Colton Plaia brought him home. James “Papa” Roche’s two-run double brought home Oberste and Plaia.

Cyclones’ starting pitcher John Gant had a no-hitter going through six innings, but five walks and two throwing errors by Plaia allowed two unearned runs for the Spinners in the first two innings.

After Lowell tied the game in the top of the eighth, outfielder Patrick “To Infinity and” Biondi led off the bottom half with a walk. Two outs later, King hit a shot to center, where two Lowell outfielders collided, allowing the ball to fall between them and bring in Biondi in for the deciding run.

The Cyclones look to complete the sweep today.
