Grand Street on the highway to health

Torrents of rain did little to keep young people away from converging on the Grand Street Campus (84 Bushwick Avenue) for New York City’s largest ever Health Festival. Sponsored by Health Corps, a health educational and mentoring program founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz, the festival took place in all five boroughs.

“Our Highway to Health Fairs represent a central part of HealthCorps’ mission to reach often neglected communities to make them more aware of the benefits of choosing healthier lifestyle options today,” said Dr. Oz.

HealthCorps coordinators work at affiliated schools, including the Grand Street Campus, to educate and mentor teens on nutrition, fitness, and self-esteem through a variety of afterschool programs and classes such as cooking and yoga.

“We’re here to enhance and supplement the school’s health education curriculum and help prevent heart disease, obesity, and diabetes later in life,” said Adriane Tuttle, a HealthCorps coordinator.
