Gravesend lil’ leaguers march to their ‘field of dreams’

C’mon now, play ball!

Budding A-Rods from Our Lady of Grace Athletic Association hit a home run with the sidewalk crowd when they opened their Little League season with a rip-roaring’ parade to their field of dreams — accompanied by Brooklyn Cyclones mascot Sandy the Seagull.

To cheers and waves from homeowners and merchants, the human ribbon of blue and white uniforms criss-crossed from outside Our Lady of Grace Church on Avenue W, between East 3rd and East 4th Streets, to 86th Street and onto West 6th Street before heading along Avenue U to West Street and the Msgr. Sclafani Ballfields in Gravesend for opening day festivities.

“The children were having a great time, passing all the local community business, many residents were outside cheering and waving, it was good community feeling,” said Todd Dobrin, a member of Community Board 13 who marched with his two-year-old daughter, Sarina, to music from the Marine Park Junior High School Band.

As part of the celebration, MVP Frank Morrone received a trophy and autographed drawing of New York Yankees’ pitcher Don Larsen from Association official Frank Lopiccolo.
