“Anatomy of a Brownstone: Green Roofs, Green Homes,” an educational seminar for people who live in and love Brownstones, will be presented by New York City College of Technology, Division of Continuing Education and Brooklyn Economic Development Council, April 26.
The “Morning Seminar” part of the program will be held 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the college, 300 Jay Street, Downtown Brooklyn, and the “Afternoon House Tour” part of the program will be from 2-4 p.m. at 93 Nevins Street, in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn.
The Morning Session: “Anatomy of a Green Brownstone,” 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or “Raising the (Green) Roof,” 10-11:30 p.m. Green roofs have been around for thousands of years- think thatch and sod- providing an affordable, energy efficient, renewable way to keep us dry in the rain, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. As energy prices soar and green space diminishes, Green Roofs are becoming increasingly attractive to homeowners. But what is a green roof, how do you get one, and how do you maintain it? A speaker from Sustainable South Bronx will show examples of green roofs that top some of the greenest homes in New York City.
Panel Discussion: Stylish, Sustainable, Energy Smart, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Featuring Gita Nandan, board member, GreenHome NYC moderator (www.greenhomenyc.org); Rolf Grimstead, developer, 93 Nevins, the first “Health House” in NYC, 93nevins.com; Jeff Honerkamp, CEO, Honerkamp Lumber, provides LEED certified alternatives to the Green Builders, www.honerkamp.com; Kris Reed, Brooklyn Center for Economic Development, administers a program to train contractors in green building methods, www.bedc.org.
Afternoon Session: Green House Tour and Home Energy Audit, 1-3 p.m. Rolf Grimstead and Greenstreet Construction will lead visitors on a tour of NYC’s first “Health House” (Health House is a designation of the American Lung Association). The 93 Nevins house has been systematically transformed from a toxic dumpsite to a comfortable and healthy multi family dwelling. See how green materials look when they are installed. Asit Patel, of the Association for Energy Affordability, will show you how a home uses and loses energy and how to how your home can receive a free home energy audit.
