Ground zero for something really big

A large vacant property in Canarsie might one day see a flurry of activity.

The city is eager to sell off a 19,508-square-foot parcel bordered by Rockaway Parkway, Avenue D and the Long Island Rail Road tracks, recently releasing a request for proposals (RFP) in hopes of finding a qualified buyer.

The land sits in an area zoned for manufacturing use, and will retain that use, according to Dorothy Turano, the district manager of Community Board 18.

Officials from the Economic Development Corporation (EDC), who issued the RFP, will discuss the matter at Community Board 18’s June meeting.

The disposition of the land will require a full public review, which will begin at the community board level.

Turano, speaking at the board’s May meeting, said the EDC said its strongest respondent is Rolling Steel Industries, an East New York based door and gate manufacturer.

“They will bring in a multitude of new jobs for people,” Turano said. “They will be an asset.”

Janel Patterson, an EDC spokesperson, said the quasi-public agency is in the process of selecting the winning bid. “It’s not finalized,” she said.
