Two local students were in the spotlight, honored for their academic achievement and their service to their school.

Ruggiany Georges and Lina LeGagneur, who attend Public School 119, 3829 Avenue K, received plaques and savings bonds from the Nieuw Amersfort Community Association (NACA).

At the group’s June meeting, which was held in St. Paul’s Church, 3913 Avenue J, NACA President Steve Yamin praised the students, who, he said, are “chosen by their peers.” The organizations follows the careers of the students after they leave P.S. 119, Yamin added. “The students we have given awards to have been doing very well,” he said.

“We are very proud of our award recipients,” noted Barbara Snow, an assistant principal at P.S. 119. The awards, she stressed, “are based on citizenship and academics. What we see here are two fine examples of students in the community who represent their families and their neighbors and the schools in the most fabulous way.”

The students are fifth graders, on their way to intermediate school, this fall. “Sad as we are to see them go at the end of fifth grade,” Snow added, “we are so proud of them for their success.”
