Along with fashion-forward bookshelves and coffee tables, IKEA will be bringing transportation options to Red Hook.
This week, the Swedish home furnishing’s retailer IKEA finalized the details of the transit options.
By land and sea, the company said, it will be a breeze to get to the store—or at least less of a challenge than getting to Red Hook currently presents.
The company will provide a free water taxi from lower Manhattan’s Pier 11 to the store, located on Beard Street by the waterfront. The service will be available seven days a week, and will be available every 40 minutes, from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The routes of both the B61 and the B77 will be extended to stop in front of the store, which will officially open June 18.
IKEA will operate a free shuttle every 15 minutes from subway stations at Fourth Avenue/Ninth Street and Smith/Ninth Street.
A similar service on a different route will be offered to visitors taking trains at Court Street/Borough Hall.
The routes will have signage, indicating a stop for the shuttle to IKEA, and will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The store offers delivery services, and will have an Enterprise rent-a-van service on site—as well as Zip Cars.
“We are thrilled that our plan to make IKEA Brooklyn accessible for our many customers is now set to go for the variety of planned alternative transportation options,” said Mike Baker, the store’s manager.
The 346,000 square foot megastore situated on 22.5 acres and will be IKEA’s first in New York City.
IKEA Brooklyn will hold 50 different room settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area, and a 450-seat restaurant offering Swedish specialties like meatballs with lingonberries. American fare will also be offered.
The site was once home to the United States Navy, New York Shipyard and Stevens Technical Services.
