Health insurance for senior citizens

Approaching age 65 is a big transition for most people, when questions about health insurance options become prime concerns. There are many options available and many choices to make.

Beth Israel Medical Center-Kings Highway Division will host a discussion of health insurance coverage for seniors, June 18 from 6:30-8 p.m. at 3201 Kings Highway, between New York Avenue and East 32nd Street. Pre-registration by June 16 is required; call 718-951-3065 to reserve a space.

Guest speaker Michelle Berney of the New York City’s Department for the Aging’s HIICAP (Health Insurance Information, Counseling & Assistance Program) Unit, will help answer many of the key questions about the alphabet soup of insurance coverage, prescription drug plans, the Medicare Savings program and how you may be able to save money buying prescription drugs.

While full Social Security benefits may not be available until full retirement age is reached, many US citizens and permanent residents who reach 65 and worked for at least 10 years quality for basic health insurance coverage through Medicare. Those younger than 65 with a disability or with end-stage kidney disease may also qualify.

Light Kosher refreshments will be served. For more, call Mary Pickering, LMSW, geriatric support and outreach services coordinator, at 718-951-3065.
