Cyclones 9
Williamsport Crosscutters 5
July 4 at MCU Park
It was a happy Fourth of July for Brooklyn’s Boys of Summer as they extended their longest winning streak of the season to six games in their first match-up against Williamsport Crosscutters.
The Clones jumped ahead in the first, scoring four on a triple by designated hitter Cole Frenzel that brought home two runners, an RBI double by left fielder Stefan Sabol — who extended his hit streak to 10 games — and a single from third baseman Dimas Ponce that drove in another run.
The mini-Phillies scored a run in the second inning thanks to a fielding error by Cyclones second baseman Richie Rodriguez, and took the lead in the top of the fifth with runs by center fielder Brian Pointer, designated hitter Cameron Perkins, third baseman Mitch Walding, and right fielder Yan Olmo.
But the Cyclones wouldn’t go down easy.
In the bottom half of the frame, Sabol, who went two-for-four on the night, bashed a homer out to left-center. Then a Crosscutters throwing error let Ponce reach base on a bunt that drove in new Clones first baseman Jayce Boyd. To cap things off, top prospect Brandon Nimmo crushed a three-run homer, giving Brooklkyn a four-run lead that the club held through nine.
The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] tonight at 7 pm as they take on the Williamsport Crosscutters.
