Right now, the Sean Casey Animal Rescue picks up about 60 or so dogs a month that are then put up for adoption.
With a new adoption van, the Kensington shelter estimates it could in six months double that number, as well as increase the number of adoptions.
On July 18, the shelter will be holding an event to help raise funds toward a van (the shelter currently partners with other rescue outfits and uses their vehicles), as well mark its second anniversary at its 153 East 3rd Street location, at the corner of Fort Hamilton Parkway.
In addition to a BBQ, music and games, the event will also provide an opportunity for people to adopt a pet.
“We love to dispel the myth that shelter animals are throwaway animals,” said director Charles Henderson, who himself has seven dogs.
In addition to rescuing animals such as cats and dogs, the shelter, the only exotic rescue in the city, gets the call when alligators or tortoises turn up in New York City homes and apartments.
“We’re constantly getting pigs, turkeys, chickens, you name it,” said Henderson.
You won’t be able to get your hands on a pot−bellied pig, but you could adopt a guinea pig at the July 18 event.
