The Taxpayer Assistance Center at 625 Fulton Street is among a dozen statewide Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax-help centers, which will expand their service to taxpayers eligible for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) by opening their doors February 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The extra days are being added to help lower-income taxpayers, who may not be able to seek assistance during the work week, said IRS spokesman Kevin McKeon.
The EITC is a refundable credit, which can result in a refund of more than $4,800 for eligible taxpayers in the area. Taxpayers with incomes below $41,464 may be eligible to claim this credit, depending on their filing status.
New York taxpayers, who wish to know if they qualify for the EITC, can visit one of the assistance centers where personnel will answer questions, offer additional information, provide literature and help prepare returns claiming the credit.
Taxpayers not in these areas can locate the center nearest to them by visiting www.irs.gov. A list of local offices, and days and hours of service, by state is available at www.irs.gov/localcontacts.
Aside from IRS offices, taxpayers can also receive help at more than 12,000 free tax assistance sites, nationwide. Find one near you by calling 1-800-906-9887.
Also, remember to bring the following documents: a valid driver’s license, or photo identification (self and spouse, if applicable); Social Security cards for all persons listed on the return; dates of birth for all persons listed on the return; all income statements, including forms W-2, 1099, Social Security, unemployment or other benefits’ statements, self-employment records and any documents showing taxes withheld; dependent child care information, including payee’s name, address and SSN or TIN; proof of account at financial institution for direct debit, or deposit (e.g., cancelled/voided check or bank statement; prior year tax return (if available); and any other pertinent documents or papers.
