Volunteers from as far away as Mississippi showed up to make sandwiches for Brooklyn’s homeless last Saturday.
The anti-hunger charity One Sandwich at a Time convened its monthly sandwich-making event at St. John Church Parish Hall in Bay Ridge on March 22.
The folks who turned out made sandwiches for the first two hours of the event and at then the volunteers were entertained with a special performance by the Mississippi Gulf Coast College Choir, an 80-person singing group that also helped make sandwiches.
“I’ve always liked helping people” said choir member Felicia Martin. “We were just told that we were doing this event, but it is something that I would have done anyway on my own, and I’ll do it again.”
The choir, which includes many survivors of Hurricane Katrina, traveled to the city with the help of Seachrist Travel, and brooklynONE Productions also sponsored the event.
One Sandwich at a Time was founded by Erin Dinan, a photographer who returned a few years ago from assignments in the developing world and was shocked by the prevalence of homelessness and hunger in New York City.
The sandwiches were boxed and delivered to local food pantries and soup kitchens.
