Sharpen your nails and hide the itching powder — a beauty pageant is coming to town!

For the first time in 16 years, the Miss Brooklyn pageant will twirl back to the borough on Feb. 23, sending its winner off to the Miss New York pageant — and perhaps even Miss America, the holy tiara of beauty contests.

“The face of Miss America has changed,” Kim Thomas, executive director of the Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Program, told GO Brooklyn. “We’re looking for someone outgoing and fun with spunk and spice to her. [A woman] who doesn’t fit the mold of Miss America from the 1960s and ’70s.”

Each of the eight contestants will compete in a private interview, on-stage question-and-answer session, swimsuit and evening gown competition and talent contest.

Forget about baton tossing. The vivacious contestants vying for the crown of Miss Brooklyn 2008 will be singing, dancing, and (at least one pageant competitor will be) performing a comedy routine. Take that, Miss Rochester!

Of course, all of the primping and prancing is for a good cause. She who takes the crown will also receive a $1,000 scholarship, makeup and hair consultations and entry into the state finals.

“Brooklyn is full of talent and intelligent young ladies,” said Thomas. “Miss New York — and possibly Miss America — is going to be from Brooklyn this year!”

The Miss Brooklyn pageant will take place at 4 pm on Feb. 23 at the Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts on the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University (at the intersection of Flatbush Avenue Extension and DeKalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn). Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. For information, visit www.brooklynqueens.org.
