Here’s how to get a cheap apartment in Bushwick
Nookland

Your prayers for a cheaper apartment have been answered.

Renters looking to save a buck on apartments at the new Saint Mark Luxury Apartments complex — a converted church and catholic school attached to a new seven-story building in Bushwick — can apply for one of the 20 units available at below market rates now.

Of course, you have to qualify, get your application in by June 9, and then win a lottery.

But it’s worth it if you area single person making between $31,000 and $38,000, because you can land your own one-bedroom apartment in Bushwick. And a family of four earning between $37,000 a $54,000 can squeeze into a two-bedroom apartment for $1,071 a month. Other family sizes and income levels are also available.

Applications will be selected via a lottery. Applicants are then invited to an interview to confirm eligibility. The whole process can take 10 months, according to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

Those new to the process can come to application information sessions held in English and Spanish at the St. Martin de Tours Roman Catholic Church 1288 Hancock St. between Knickerbocker and Wilson avenues in Bushwick every Thursday from 11 am to 5 pm. No appointment is necessary.

Applications can be submitted online, at nyc.gov/housingconnect, or via snail mail, by sending a self-addressed envelope to The Saint Marks Apts, c/o CUFFH, 66 Whipple St., Brooklyn, N.Y., 11206. Only one application per development will be accepted; applicants who submit more than one application may be disqualified. Applications must be postmarked or submitted online no later than June 9; late applications will not be considered.
