High rank for Maimonides – Hospital excels in cardiac care

“Hospital Compare,” the US government website that helps the public review the quality of care in hospitals, has just published the most recent data on mortality rates for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia patients. Of nearly 5,000 hospitals in the nation, only nine performed better than the national rate in treating heart attacks; 41 in treating heart failure; and 41 in treating pneumonia.

Maimonides Medical Center, 4802 10th Avenue, is the only hospital in the nation to perform better than the national rate in all three categories of patient care.

“This is excellent news for our patients and families,” said Pamela S. Brier, president and chief executive officer of Maimonides. “It’s gratifying for our staff to see that our relentless efforts to improve are making a significant difference in the quality of patient care.”

Maimonides Medical Center is recognized as a national leader in implementing electronic patient records. This dedication to staying ahead of the curve in technology combined with a daily focus on fundamentals is the key to achieving outstanding patient outcomes.

“Our patients tend to be older and sicker than average,” explained Dr. Edgar Lichstein, chair of Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center. “In the face of that challenge, we rely heavily on evidence-based medicine. At the same time, our teaching environment encourages constant innovation in patient care.”

In 2007, Maimonides Medical Center was one of only three hospitals in the nation to achieve top rates for patient outcomes in heart attack and heart failure on the Hospital Compare website. The Medical Center also has been commended for outstanding services by a number of independent rating organizations. The Alliance for Quality Health Care, the National Research Corporation and HealthGrades are among those that have recognized Maimonides for excellence.

Maimonides Medical Center is a large academic institution providing tertiary care in a diverse urban environment.
