An 8-year-old Midwood boy is in stable condition after the driver of a minivan struck him on Avenue J near E. 29th Street and fled the scene on March 20.

The boy was crossing Avenue J in a crosswalk on his way to the store at about 7:51 am on Thursday when the driver of a green Dodge Caravan traveling eastbound on Avenue J struck him, police said.

The child was alone, but his mother watched in horror from a nearby window as the scene unfolded, according to police.

A witness alerted the Flatbush Hatzoloh immediately after the accident, and the volunteer ambulance rushed the boy to Lutheran Hospital, according to a spokeswoman from the organization.

The boy suffered a fractured left leg and is listed in stable condition, police said.

The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad, which responds to serious traffic incidents, responded to the scene several hours later, because the Hatzoloh did not alert police to the extent of the boy’s injuries, police said. A Hatzoloh spokeswoman said it is not the organization’s policy to call police.

When a police supervisor went to the hospital and saw the severity of the child’s injuries, the supervisor ordered the Collision Investigation Squad to the scene, police said.
